You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup: Recognizing Stress and Burnout
Funeral service is a profession built around caring for other people.
Day after day, funeral professionals step into families’ lives during some of their most difficult moments. You listen. You solve problems. You manage details. You respond to unexpected situations. And often, you do it on someone else’s schedule rather than your own.
It’s meaningful work. It can also be demanding work.
Stress doesn’t always announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it looks like being more irritable than usual. Difficulty sleeping. Trouble concentrating. Feeling exhausted even after a day off. Losing enthusiasm for things you normally enjoy. Or simply feeling as though your reserves are running low.
Those feelings aren’t something you have to ignore until they become a bigger problem.
Through NFDA’s SupportLinc Member Assistance Program, members and their immediate family members have access to confidential resources that can help with stress, burnout and other emotional and everyday challenges.
A licensed clinician is available 24/7/365 for in-the-moment support. Members and their immediate family can also receive up to three short-term counseling sessions, either in person or via video.
SupportLinc also offers burnout resources designed to help you identify sources of stress, determine which factors are within your control and develop an action plan for managing stress at work and at home. Additional tools address sleep, overall well-being and other issues that can affect how you feel and function each day.
And you don’t have to be experiencing a mental health crisis to use these resources.
Perhaps you’ve had a particularly difficult case that has stayed with you. Maybe staffing challenges have stretched everyone thin. Perhaps the demands of owning a funeral home are following you home at night. Or maybe work is fine, but something happening in your personal life is consuming your energy.
Those are all reasons to reach out.
Taking care of yourself doesn’t diminish your commitment to the families you serve. In fact, paying attention to your own well-being can help ensure you have the energy, patience and compassion to continue doing the work that matters so much to your community.
You spend a great deal of your life caring for others. Through SupportLinc, NFDA wants to make sure support is there when you need someone to care for you, too. Click here to learn more.
