Recently, the Monument Builders of North America (MBNA) released another Monument Matters podcast episode, “White Bronze Wonders: Preserving America’s Zinc Memorials.”
Hosted by Mike Johns of Johns-Carabelli Company, this episode features Jerry Mascola, the president of Granite City Tool and president-elect of MBNA’s Supplier Bronze Division, and Tom Podnar, a retired senior conservator from McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory. Together, they explore the beauty, history and preservation of white bronze – or zinc – monuments.
“White bronze monuments represent America’s ingenuity at its best,” said Mascola. “They were innovative, durable and a cost-effective alternative to bronze during their time. These memorials still stand today as a testament to both artistry and engineering.”
Podnar, a leading expert in zinc-monument restoration, shares his behind-the-scenes insights from decades of preservation work. “Each monument tells a story,” he stated. “From the craftsmanship of the 1800s to the challenges of modern conservation, preserving these pieces requires a deep respect for their history and specialized expertise.”
Listeners will gain practical advice, including how to identify white bronze memorials in cemeteries and why monument professionals should engage specialists for repairs and restoration. The conversation highlights not only the enduring legacy of these monuments but also the importance of industry collaboration in preserving them for future generations.
