Helping Consumers Understand Their Green Funeral Options

What does a “green funeral” actually look like?

The answer isn’t necessarily one particular type of burial or disposition—and that’s one of the messages NFDA Spokesperson Tim Schramm shares during a recent appearance on the Grounded in Maine podcast.

Drawing on nearly four decades of experience in funeral service and approximately 20 years of involvement with the Green Burial Council, Schramm helps listeners explore the range of environmentally conscious choices available to families.

The conversation goes beyond the idea that a funeral is either “green” or it isn’t. Schramm discusses what he describes as different “shades of green”—choices families can make based on their values, wishes and comfort level. The episode explores green burial, embalming alternatives and other options while giving consumers an opportunity to hear directly from an experienced funeral professional about a topic generating growing interest.

It also provides NFDA with an important opportunity to make sure funeral directors are part of the public conversation as consumers explore new and evolving end-of-life choices.

This is a particularly useful episode to share with your community. If your funeral home receives questions about green burial or environmentally friendly funeral options, consider sharing the podcast on social media, in your newsletter or blog, or as a resource for families interested in learning more.
