Session Descriptions

9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Leadership Session 1: Lesley Witter – Washington Update: How Federal Politics Are Shaping the Future of Funeral Service

Lesley will examine the evolving landscape of advocacy in Washington, D.C., one year into the 119th Congress and the second term of President Donald Trump. We’ll discuss key legislation and regulatory issues affecting funeral service leaders and the implications for your business and profession. We will also explore the broader role of advocacy in shaping national policy during this period of renewed political transition.

1:15 – 2:30 p.m. Optional Session: Martha Thayer – Leading Through Conflict: Practical Skills for Difficult Conversations

Difficult conversations are inevitable in leadership. This session will provide practical strategies for navigating conflict, communicating with confidence, and addressing challenging situations with professionalism and empathy. Participants will gain tools to strengthen relationships, improve team dynamics and lead conversations more effectively in high-pressure environments.
8:45 – 10 a.m. Leadership Session 2: Bob Harris – Associations:  Impact, Governance and Value

Some associations excel in delivering value to their members and maintaining strong, effective governance. Others continue to operate with outdated practices, often relying on the mindset of, “We’ve always done it this way.” To remain impactful and relevant, boards must clearly understand their role and responsibilities, with a strategic focus on efficiency, growth, innovation and providing meaningful value to the profession and industry they serve.

10:15 – 11:30 a.m. Leadership Session 3: Chris Yonker – Leading the Next Generation of Funeral Service Professionals Strategies to Influence, Engage, and Retain a Changing Workforce

Today’s workforce is evolving, and funeral service leaders must adapt their leadership approach to meet changing expectations, communication styles and workplace priorities. This session will explore practical strategies for influencing, engaging and retaining employees while building a strong, connected workplace culture. Participants will gain insights into leading across generations, improving team engagement and developing the leadership skills needed to support the future of the profession.

1:15 – 2:30 p.m. Optional Session: Bob Harris – Strategic Plan and Governing Documents

Effective governance requires boards to operate within clear organizational guardrails. Are the bylaws current and relevant? Is the strategic plan actively guiding decision-making? Do organizational policies adequately protect and support the association? From board orientation and leadership development to strategic planning and policy oversight, this session is designed to equip leaders with the knowledge, tools and framework needed to effectively fulfill their governance responsibilities and lead with confidence.

1:15 – 2:30 p.m. Optional Session: Chris Yonker – The Human Side of Leadership

Strong leadership is about more than operations and decision-making — it’s about people. This session will explore how emotional intelligence, communication, empathy and trust impact team culture, employee engagement and retention in funeral service. Participants will gain practical strategies for leading with authenticity, navigating workplace challenges and building stronger connections within their teams.
8:15 – 9:00 a.m. Leadership Session IV: Chris Farmer – Leadership & Liability: Navigating Legal Challenges in Funeral Service

Today’s workforce is evolving, and funeral service leaders must adapt their leadership approach to meet changing expectations, communication styles and workplace priorities. Great leadership is built over time and shaped by experience, resilience and a commitment to something greater than oneself. In this closing keynote, a family business leader from the bourbon industry will share insights on building a lasting legacy, navigating generational leadership and sustaining a values-driven business across decades. Participants will leave with practical reflections on leadership, continuity and what it truly means to build something that stands the test of time.
