T. Scott Gilligan, Esq., is an attorney with Gilligan Law Offices in Cincinnati, Ohio. He serves as General Counsel to the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), the largest organization of funeral directors in the United States. Mr. Gilligan has worked on NFDA matters since 1982, and became General Counsel for the association in 1993. He graduated in 1976 from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., and obtained his law degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1979.
In addition to his representation of NFDA, Mr. Gilligan serves as General Counsel to the Ohio, the Montana, and the Wisconsin funeral director associations. He has also represented several other state funeral associations, including the Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia associations.
Mr. Gilligan's family has been in funeral service for over 130 years in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of the 2003 edition of Mortuary Law, a textbook used widely in mortuary colleges. He has also provided numerous seminars to funeral associations throughout the country on FTC Funeral Rule compliance, legal liabilities faced by funeral homes, and updates on regulatory and legislative issues impacting the funeral profession.
