Pinning flyers to a community board at a coffee shop, placing them in the lobby of a business, or handing them out to neighbors is an opportunity to begin a valuable relationship and a great way to get the word out about the contest.
Tips for approaching a local business: Take the flyers with you to a coffee shop or community center. Introduce yourself to whomever you encounter and ask to speak with a manager or leader. When you are connected to a leader, let them know who you are and what business you’re from, and tell them you’d like to promote a film contest by leaving flyers. Tell them you’ve admired their business or organization (if that is true!) and wanted to use this as an opportunity to introduce yourself. Then tell them about the contest. There is a chance they’ll ask how you, a funeral director, became part of a film contest. At that point you can share words like these:
“This film contest was created to help people talk about how important it is to commemorate the lives of people we have loved. We want to do a better job of creating meaningful conversations in our communities, and this is a way we can do it.”
“The contest was created by the National Funeral Directors Association. That’s an organization that I participate in. The NFDA partnered with a filmmaker alliance in the midwest to launch the contest.”

Hello Friends,
At (Funeral Home Name), we hear inspiring life stories every day. Stories about people who have overcome huge obstacles. People who have created a beautiful legacy of family and friendship. We are moved to laugh, to cry, to reflect, and to dream. It’s amazing how stories can move us so deeply.
In honor of the countless stories we have heard and helped to share, we are excited to promote the Remembering a Life Film Contest, sponsored by the National Funeral Directors Association working in partnership with the Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance. Amateur and professional filmmakers alike are encouraged to enter by creating a film that commemorates the life of someone who has died, or pays tribute someone who is still alive. The goal is to show a variety of ways that life can be remembered through film.
There are three generous prizes: First place - $10,000, Second place - $5,000, and Third place - $2,500. The films will be debuted at the 2018 NFDA International Convention & Expo in Salt Lake City this October and will then be shown to the public through a variety of channels.
A flyer is attached.
