The Hekman design team at Cressy Memorial Group awarded Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home, Middletown, Ohio the first annual Interior Design Award for Best Conversation Area. Pam Parramore, manager, accepted the prize - a Howard Miller Gallery clock.
“During our visits to funeral homes and cemeteries we have noticed attention to decorating details which truly enhance visitor comfort. We believe outstanding efforts deserve recognition. That was the inspiration for this contest.” stated MaryAnne Scheuble, Interior Decorator and Hekman Design Specialist. “Great conversation areas make a location memorable. It’s why we frequent the same restaurant or meet at the same friend’s house. The ambiance and welcoming environment invite us to return.”
Entries required a photo plus brief essay. This year’s award focused on conversation areas where two or more people could easily visit, console each other or share memories of a happier time.
Sarah Tepe, Marketing and Sales Director for Cressy Memorial Group acknowledged “The flexible, inviting design earned Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home the judges’ vote. We were impressed by the bright, open floor plan. The relaxed seating allows for paired or group conversations. An ottoman was noted as a smart design element since it serves as seating, or a coffee table, or can create ‘breathing’ space between guests.”
The four-judge panel evaluated elements based on ease of accommodation plus versatility of design. “There were a few submissions which impressed us.” explained Scheuble. “We felt it was important to acknowledge these notable entries with Honorable Mentions.”
Honorable Mention: Gallop Funeral Services, Inc., Nags Head, NC
Partners Courtney Gallop and J. Ben Andrews went the extra mile by combining good design layout with support of a local non-profit. The judges were impressed that a drug-addition ministry was employed to provide services which, in turn, fostered cozy seating areas for funeral home visitors.
Honorable Mention: Calloway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan, TX
Cody and Chelsea Jones, owners, mapped out spacious, bright seating areas. The judges applaud their dual design goal to create a space for guests to linger and to help a family smile again.
Honorable Mention:Flanner Buchanan- Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, IN
Bruce Buchanan, fourth-generation owner believes that a modern space with intimate seating areas could be free from distractions yet feel inspirational. The judges agreed that the clean, bright areas welcome guests to focus on conversation.
“The visible pride in each design speaks of thoughtful planning as well as hard work. It was heartening to see such gracious examples of furnishings designed to comfort,” affirmed MaryAnne Scheuble. “And the Howard Miller Wingate Gallery Clock will look great in its new home at Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home!”
