There’s a new scam going around targeting people who may be looking to make a few extra dollars to supplement their income.
A woman by the name Anne Harduk has been contacting funeral directors via LinkedIn. She purports to be a member of the Advisory Board of North Point Memorial Group, a funeral home conglomerate out of Texas. The offer is for a virtual executive assistant position.
Applicants are hired on the spot and sent a check in the amount of $2,950 with instructions to deposit the check and purchase a printer and software from North Point's “preferred provider.”
The check is, of course, not legitimate, and the “preferred provider” is nothing more than a shell corporation. Before you realize that the check has not cleared, nearly $3,000 will be missing from your account.
North Point Memorial Group is aware of the situation and has taken legal action to remove Anne from LinkedIn (which seems to have happened); they have also terminated the email address she uses.
Whenever you receive an offer of employment – especially offers for virtual or “work from home” opportunities – do your homework to ensure it is legitimate.
