Both chambers of Congress were in session last week to finish up a number of issues before the current session ends. After the coming week, Members will be breaking for their respective party conventions and the August recess.
The House was focused on the financial services appropriations bill and gun control bills. The House has moved slowly on the financial services bill due to the number of amendments offered for the bill. During the amendment process, House Democrats used their debate time to bring up gun control legislation that they’ve been pushing since the Orlando shooting. It caused issues and slowed down the process but the legislation passed late last week. The House also passed the conference report on opioid legislation on Friday.
In the Senate, its members looked move the defense appropriations bill forward through a number of procedural votes. Debate is expected to begin on Monday, July 11 for the bill.
In other news, Donald Trump visited Congressional Republicans last Thursday. He held meetings with both the House and Senate and discussed the upcoming election with them. He also discussed his relationship with Congress and reports of the meeting stated that it was contentious, especially with the Senate.
