NFDA Special Bulletin

April 17, 2007

We at the National Funeral Directors Association join with all our members in honoring the memories of those who died in the tragic shootings that happened yesterday at Virginia Tech. Tragedies like this affect all of us, in communities around the country, whether touched directly or not. For those looking to memorialize those who have died in their own funeral homes and communities, NFDA offers the following materials:

Community Memorials

There are many ways, both large and small, that your funeral home can open its doors to the community and serve as a place to mourn.

  • Condolence Book
Consider putting out a special condolence book in your funeral home that visitors may sign. Condolences for the campus community as a whole should be forwarded to:

    The Office of the President
    210 Burruss Hall (0131)
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
    Blacksburg, VA 24061

In addition, information about the Virginia Tech Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund can be found here: http://www.vt.edu/tragedy/memorial_fund.php

  • Memorial Service
Work with your local clergy and community leaders to bring the community together to grieve for those who died in Blacksburg. When such a tragic incident happens, it reverberates throughout the country and giving people a safe space to come together to talk and to grieve is extremely important.

  • Grief Resources
NFDA's Resource Store has a wealth of information available to help both those grieving, and those looking for resources dealing with how to talk about death. Those offerings include:

    • What Will We Do: Preparing a School Community to Cope with Crisis, by Robert Stevenson
      Product Code: BK261 $36

    • A Teacher's Guide to the Grieving Student: Guidelines and Suggestions for School Personnel Grades K-12, by Hospice of Lancaster County
      Product Code: BK271 $5.50

    • Talking About Death: A Dialogue between Parent and Child, by Earl Grollman
      Product Code: BK270 $16
