Post-Enucleation Care of the Eye Donor for Embalmers & Eye Enucleators

There have been tremendous advancements in medicine since the first successful human-to-human cornea transplant in 1906. According to the Eye Bank Association of America, there were 95,103 eye and cornea donations from 47,889 donors during 1998. As the frequency of eye and cornea donations continue to increase, it is important for embalmers to review the proper procedures for caring for eye donors following enucleation. Post-Enucleation Care of the Eye Donor for Embalmers & Eye Enucleators explains how to solve and prevent problems related to cornea and eye donations. It also includes a historical overview of events that contributed to the public's acceptance of eye donations and a list of suggested reading material. The article was written by Michael M. Marquette, AFSE, CEBT, who is a certified eye-bank technician and technical director for the Lions Eye Bank of Oregon for the past 17 years. Marquette is an eye enucleation trainer for funeral service professionals in the state of Oregon. Before employment with the eye bank, Marquette was a licensed embalmer/funeral director and a volunteer eye enucleator.
