A Nation Mourns

Funeral directors demonstrate their compasion after the Littleton, Colorado, tragedy

Written by Kelly Smith

On April 20, 1999, Littleton, Colorado, made headlines across the United States when two Columbine High School boys massacred 12 of their classmates and a teacher and then turned their guns on themselves. As soon as they heard about the killing spree, Littleton-area funeral directors knew that the next week would be one they would never forget. A Nation Mourns—Funeral directors demonstrate their compassion after the Littleton, Colorado, tragedy describes how the funeral directors who arranged the funerals of the victims coped during the event and describes how other funeral service professionals from Colorado and across the United States offered their support. Written by Kelly Smith, NFDA's public relations manager, the article describes how funeral directors worked with the media during these services, which were attended by hundreds of individuals.
