Is Requiring a B.S. Degree B.S?

Written by Robert W. Ninker

How much education do you need to be a good funeral director? Funeral service licensing requirements vary greatly from state to state—from a four-year degree to no requirements at all. There has been a lot of discussion on the benefits of a baccalaureate degree for prospective funeral service professionals, which has lead to a heated debate to make the four-year degree mandatory in all states to obtain a funeral service license. In his article Is Requiring a B.S. Degree B.S?, Robert Ninker provides seven reasons why more consideration needs to be undertaken before a national educational requirement is enforce. Ninker is the executive director of the Illinois FDA and the Funeral Ethics Association. He also has served on the Advisory Board to the SIU School of Mortuary Science for 25 years.
