To Learn or Not to Learn? That is the Question

Written by O. Duane Weeks

In 1960, only 7.7 percent of U.S. citizens age 25 years old and older had experienced four or more years of college. In 1995, that statistic has grown to 23 percent of U.S. citizens having at least a baccalaureate degree. To Learn or Not to Learn? That is the Question, discusses how this demand for higher education is having an impact on mortuary science schools across the country. Written by O. Duane Weeks, Ph.D., director of New England Institute of Funeral Service Education at Mount Ida College, Newton Centre, MA, the article explains the dilemma mortuary science schools face today and offers three alternative resolutions. The article also focuses on the problem funeral directors have in keeping up with the demand for education, since most practicing funeral directors have roots established and would rather not leave the business to return to school for another year or two.
