Handling and Preventing Sexual Harassment

Lower job performance, friction among employees and absenteeism are just a few of the problems that can be caused by sexual harassment.

Written by Paula Bonds

Although it is probably the most visible of all harassment claims in the media today, sexual harassment continues to be widely misunderstood and often mismanaged. It involves unwelcomed physical acts, verbal comments or sexually oriented visuals and tends to occur most often in gender-based hierarchies in which men hold power over women, either as their supervisors or because women are present in a traditionally male job. Paula Bonds, vice president and assistant general counsel for United Family Life Insurance Co., Atlanta, GA, unveils the disguises of sexual harassment in her article, Handling and Preventing Sexual Harassment. It explains what to do when a sexual harassment incident occurs and includes a sidebar revealing the signs of sexual harassment including verbal, nonverbal and physical indications.
