The Needs of Children Impacted by Violent Death
Positive things you can do to help a child or teen who has experienced a traumatic death
Because of the events of September 11, 2001, many children in the New York and Washington D.C., areas suffered devastating losses. The Dougy Center, knows firsthand some of the complications these children may face. Children and teens in violent death and suicide groups express fear and distrust of others because their safe, secure world has been shattered by the violence.
The Needs of Children Impacted by Violent Death, written by Joan Schweizer Hoff and Amy Lindholm, discusses how children and teens react when a loved one dies. It also covers positive things that can be done to help a child or teen who has experienced a traumatic death. Hoff is the director of program services for The Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, and Lindholm is the coordinator of children’s grief services for The Dougy Center.
