Grieving the Ultimate Sacrifice
TAPS provides invaluable resources for those mourning the loss of a loved one in the armed forces
In this age of self-help groups and support organizations, the funeral service profession has taken the lead in recognizing the unique role peer-support and grief-counseling organizations can play as continuing-care referral resources. Today, national organizations focus on virtually every specific loss experience. The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) was founded in the wake of a military tragedy: the deaths of eight soldiers abroad an Army National Gurad aircraft in November 1992.
In Grieving the Ultimate Sacrifice, Bonnie Carroll covers the role of TAPS, what it provides to survivors who died during military service, and the vital role of funeral directors. Carroll is the founder and president of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors in Washington D.C.
