From Devine to Sublime

The renovation of a 40-year-old funeral home enables one firm to better serve families today and well into the future.

Written by J. Sanders Tate

In the late 1990s it became clear to the manager of Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia, South Carolina, that the building needed a dramatic face lift. While the contemporary design of the original facility on Devine Street suited the tastes of the firm's clientele, the building was too small to meet the needs of the growing business. In addition, the firm's original owner fought a 20-year battle against a leak that developed in the building's flat roof. From Devine to Sublime explains the new features of the newly expanded and renovated funeral home and features before and after pictures. The article also highlights some important considerations when planning a funeral home renovation. The article was written by J. Sanders Tate, a principal partner with Watson Tate Savory Architects in Columbia, South Carolina.
