The Director - Features

Wisdom and Knowledge

Are the manufacturers of funeral products telling funeral directors what is meaningful?

Written by Beacham McDougald

A well-known medical symbol features two serpents curled around a shaft. One of the serpents represents wisdom and the other represents knowledge. One definition of wisdom is the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships. Knowledge is defined as an acquaintance with, or an understanding of, a science, art or technique. Much like the medical profession, funeral service has struggled to balance wisdom and knowledge during the last century. Wisdom and Knowledge, by Beacham McDougald, CFSP, explains the parallels between the history of medicine and funeral service during the 20th century. It explains how the hospice movement and recent surge in personalization has lead people to be more open and more active in end-of-life choices. He comments on the increase in funeral service products that are now available and explains why the future of funeral service belongs to professionals rich in wisdom. McDougald is the fourth-generation owner and operator of McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg, NC.
