A Manager’s Notebook

A seasoned funeral home manager shares his learned-in-the-trenches insights on perhaps the toughest job in funeral service: hiring and managing other people

Written by Michael Turch

In A Manager’s Notebook, writer Michael Turch discusses several intricacies involving management and hiring staff with topics such as how to be prepared for hiring new staff, job descriptions and management expectations, how to deal with personnel problems, how to treat staff members, and how to avoid chaos in an organization. In 1994, Turch authored Considering a Career in Mortuary Science. In 1996, he founded “A Cremation Company,” one of the first companies of its kind in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, which merged the next year with Mountcastle Funeral Home to become “A Dignified Funeral & Cremation Service.” In 2000, Turch took over as general manager of Mountcastle Funeral Home and presently manages four locations and more than 20 employees.
