For Immediate Release: April 1, 2026

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is proud to announce that Jennifer M. Schlosser, co-owner of Schlosser Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Wapakoneta, Ohio, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 NFDA Inspiration Award. Sponsored by National Guardian Life Insurance Company (NGL), this prestigious award honors an exceptional woman who has made significant contributions to the funeral service profession and her community.

Schlosser will be presented with the award during the NFDA Professional Women&amp;rsquo;s Conference, taking place May 6 through 9 in St. Pete Beach, Florida.

&amp;ldquo;Jennifer&amp;rsquo;s story is one that so many in funeral service will recognize and admire,&amp;rdquo; said NFDA CEO Christine Pepper, MBA, CAE. &amp;ldquo;She is building a business, raising a family and showing up for her community in ways that are both visible and deeply personal. Whether she&amp;rsquo;s mentoring the next generation, creating meaningful moments for families or simply being present when it matters most, Jennifer leads with heart. That&amp;rsquo;s what makes her truly deserving of this recognition.&amp;rdquo;

A licensed funeral director, embalmer and preneed insurance agent, Schlosser has built a career defined by leadership, service and a deep commitment to families. Alongside her husband, she co-owns and operates a family-run funeral home while raising three children, balancing the demands of business ownership with a passion for meaningful, personalized care.

Through her work, Schlosser has strengthened connections between her funeral home and the community it serves. She organizes outreach programs such as &amp;ldquo;Coffee and Conversation&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Lunch and Learn&amp;rdquo; events to help families better understand preplanning and the value of a meaningful funeral service, and she creates deeply personal experiences for families, including support for families that have experienced the death of an infant, and an annual Candle Lighting Ceremony with custom memorial candles.

Her commitment to service extends well beyond the funeral home. Schlosser is actively involved in her church and local school community, volunteers with the American Red Cross, and supports a wide range of community initiatives, from sponsoring youth activities and local events to creating opportunities for families to engage with the funeral home outside of times of loss. Her approach reflects a belief that funeral service is not just a profession, but an integral part of the community it serves.

Schlosser&amp;rsquo;s impact extends across the profession. She serves as Northwest Regional Director for the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, where she actively supports members, contributes to board initiatives and helps lead efforts focused on recruitment and retention. She has played a key role in developing resources to support funeral homes and regularly speaks with students and young professionals to encourage careers in funeral service.

Committed to continuous growth, Schlosser was selected as Ohio&amp;rsquo;s representative in the inaugural Tri-State Leadership Academy, further strengthening her leadership, communication and strategic thinking skills.

Her colleagues consistently point to both her professional excellence and personal character. One supporter shared that Schlosser &amp;ldquo;leads with integrity, mentors with generosity, and serves with compassion and drive,&amp;rdquo; while another noted that she &amp;ldquo;represents the very heart of what funeral service is meant to be,&amp;rdquo; bringing sincerity, purpose and a steady presence to every family she serves.

&amp;ldquo;Jennifer&amp;rsquo;s impact is felt not just in the services she provides to grieving families, but in the relationships she builds and the community she helps strengthen,&amp;rdquo; said Judy Olson, Vice President, Sales and Business Development, NGL. &amp;ldquo;From the personal touches she brings to every family she serves to the way she supports and uplifts others in the profession, she represents the kind of leadership and compassion this award was created to honor. We are proud to recognize her as this year&amp;rsquo;s Inspiration Award recipient.&amp;rdquo;

For Immediate Release: March 25, 2026

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; What families want from a funeral is changing, and how funeral directors guide them through those conversations must evolve, too.

More than ever, families are looking for services that are personal, authentic and reflective of the life being honored. To help funeral professionals meet that moment with confidence and creativity, the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), in partnership with InSight Institute, has opened registration for its 2026 Certified Celebrant Training. The three-day, hands-on program will take place June 24 through 26 at NFDA headquarters in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Certified celebrants play a unique and increasingly essential role in today&amp;rsquo;s funeral experience. They help families move beyond templates and traditions they may not fully connect with, guiding them instead toward services that feel meaningful, inclusive and true to the individual being remembered.

A Skillset Built for Today&amp;rsquo;s Families

Led by InSight Institute&amp;rsquo;s Glenda Stansbury, MA, CFSP, the training blends instruction, practice and real-world application to help participants strengthen both their communication and creative planning skills. Participants will learn to:

 Facilitate more open, effective conversations with families
 Translate stories, values and memories into meaningful ceremonies
 Integrate music, readings and personal elements with intention
 Deliver services with confidence, presence and authenticity
 Position celebrant services as a valuable offering within their communities

Whether working with families who prefer a traditional service with personal touches or those seeking something entirely different, celebrants are uniquely equipped to meet people where they are.

Registration is now open. Visit NFDA.org/Events to learn more and reserve your place.

Expanding Access Through Scholarships

The Funeral Service Foundation continues to support professionals who are committed to serving families in deeper, more personalized ways.

Recognizing that meaningful memorialization often involves a broader circle of care, scholarships are open not only to funeral directors but also to hospice and healthcare professionals, clergy, chaplains, educators, counselors, social workers and others who collaborate with funeral homes. Applicants must be verifiably affiliated with at least one funeral home and interested in becoming a Certified Celebrant.

Ten scholarships are available for the June 24 through 26 training. Each scholarship is valued at up to $2,000 and includes registration, two nights of hotel accommodations and up to $500 in travel reimbursement.

The application period runs through April 16. Candidates are required to submit responses to six short-answer questions, a brief video (no more than two minutes) and a letter of recommendation. To apply, visit FuneralServiceFoundation.org/Scholarship-Opportunities.

For Immediate Release: February 25, 2026

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; After more than a decade of building the profession&amp;rsquo;s most respected cremation education program, the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is implementing a thoughtful leadership transition to ensure its Cremation Certification Program remains the gold standard for funeral professionals worldwide.

For the past 12 years, Mike Nicodemus has served as NFDA&amp;rsquo;s vice president of cremation services and the driving force behind what has become the profession&amp;rsquo;s most respected cremation education and certification program. Since joining NFDA in 2013, he created and continuously elevated the NFDA Cremation Certification Program, staffed the association&amp;rsquo;s Cremation Hotline, authored numerous cremation-focused resources and traveled nationally and internationally to promote due diligence and best practices.

A licensed funeral director with more than 50 years in funeral service, Nicodemus previously served 35 years with Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was president of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA). Known to many as &amp;ldquo;Mr. Cremation,&amp;rdquo; he has been called upon repeatedly as an expert witness in cremation litigation cases and has been a leading advocate for stronger due-diligence practices in the wake of high-profile industry scandals.

&amp;ldquo;Mike&amp;rsquo;s impact on cremation education and professional standards cannot be overstated,&amp;rdquo; said Christine Pepper, CAE, NFDA CEO. &amp;ldquo;He transformed how funeral directors think about cremation operations, risk management and accountability. The program he and NFDA built has educated thousands of professionals and strengthened trust in our profession throughout the United States and around the world.&amp;rdquo;

Under Nicodemus&amp;rsquo; leadership, NFDA launched the Certified Crematory Operator Program in 2013, later evolving it into the NFDA Cremation Certification Program to better reflect the diverse roles funeral professionals play in the cremation process. The program has since reached record attendance levels and expanded internationally.

As part of a forward-looking transition plan, Timothy Copeland has been hired as an NFDA Trainer and is now serving as the primary instructor and coordinator for the Cremation Certification Program. Copeland brings more than 35 years of experience as a licensed funeral director, cremation educator and end-of-life care consultant.

He previously owned and operated Copeland Funeral Home and has held leadership roles including trustee of the New York State Funeral Directors Association PrePlan Trust and board member of the New York State Funeral Directors Association. A former educator at Hudson Valley Community College, Copeland has mentored future funeral professionals with a focus on communication, ethics and grief support. He is a certified practitioner of Dignity Therapy, co-author of a chapter in the Handbook of Thanatology and holds a Master of Science in Thanatology from Marian University.

&amp;ldquo;This transition reflects NFDA&amp;rsquo;s commitment to preserving the strong foundation Mike built while ensuring the program remains sustainable and responsive to the profession&amp;rsquo;s evolving needs,&amp;rdquo; Pepper said. &amp;ldquo;Tim&amp;rsquo;s experience in cremation education, ethics and end-of-life care will help us continue delivering the highest standard of training for funeral professionals.&amp;rdquo;

Nicodemus will continue to serve NFDA through October 2026 in a contracted training and advisory capacity. During this period, he will provide subject-matter expertise, support curriculum consistency and contribute to select educational programs, ensuring continuity in both content and standards as he prepares to retire from his work with NFDA.

The experience, rigor and outcomes of the Cremation Certification Program remain unchanged. NFDA remains fully committed to delivering high-quality, practical and respected cremation education for funeral professionals and students alike.

For Immediate Release: February 5, 2026

Partnership supports gold-standard training that helps funeral professionals better serve today&amp;rsquo;s families.

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is pleased to announce that Tribute Technology is a sponsor of NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training program, a highly regarded educational experience designed to help funeral professionals strengthen communication, build trust with families and convey the value of a meaningful funeral service.

The sponsorship reflects shared values between NFDA and Tribute Technology around innovation, education and family-centered service, particularly in supporting funeral professionals as family expectations continue to change.

Tribute Technology&amp;rsquo;s research shows that funeral home websites attract more than 3.5 billion visitors each year, with obituary pages drawing five times more traffic than other areas of the site. As more families begin the arrangement process online, either fully digitally or by starting online before meeting with a funeral director, obituaries often become the first place families connect back to the funeral home. These insights help inform how funeral professionals are trained to meet families earlier in their decision-making journey and guide more meaningful arrangement conversations. &amp;nbsp;

&amp;ldquo;Funeral professionals are being asked to meet families where they are with empathy, clarity and thoughtful use of technology,&amp;rdquo; said Matt Powell, Chief Technology Officer, Tribute Technology. &amp;ldquo;NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training aligns closely with our mission to help funeral homes serve families in meaningful, modern ways, including developing software specifically for use in the arrangement room. We&amp;rsquo;re proud to support NFDA&amp;rsquo;s program that elevates both professional development and the family experience.&amp;rdquo;

At the heart of NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training offerings is the Arrangement Skills Masterclass, an in-person, day-long immersive experience that brings funeral professionals together for collaborative learning, hands-on discussion and practical skill-building. NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training offerings also include the Arrangement Solutions Academy (a four-week, live, instructor-led virtual study group) and a Student Arranger Training Experience (a half-day interactive program tailored for mortuary science students).&amp;nbsp;

&amp;ldquo;Arranging a funeral is one of the most personal and important interactions a funeral professional has with a family,&amp;rdquo; said Lanae Strovers, CFSP, NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training instructor. &amp;ldquo;NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training helps funeral service professionals slow down, ask better questions, and guide families with confidence and compassion. Support from partners like Tribute Technology allows us to strengthen this gold-standard training and expand its impact across the profession.&amp;rdquo;

Tribute Technology is a long-time supporter of NFDA programs and initiatives, including the NFDA Convention and events app, which helps attendees make the most of association events and connect with one another. The Arranger Training sponsorship reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the profession through collaboration.

For more information about NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Arranger Training offerings, visit NFDA.org/ArrangerTraining or call 262-789-1880.

For Immediate Release: January 6, 2026

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; Change doesn&amp;rsquo;t happen on its own &amp;ndash; it happens when funeral directors step forward, show up and speak up. That&amp;rsquo;s exactly what members of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) will do during the 2026 NFDA Advocacy Summit,&amp;nbsp;taking place April 15&amp;ndash;17, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

Open to all NFDA members who want to get involved, the Advocacy Summit empowers funeral professionals &amp;ndash; whether first-time advocates or seasoned participants &amp;ndash; to play an active role in shaping federal policy that directly affects funeral service, small businesses and the families they serve.

Advocacy in Action Starts With You

The NFDA Advocacy Summit is where policy becomes personal. It&amp;rsquo;s not about watching change happen &amp;ndash; it&amp;rsquo;s about making it happen.

During the 2025 Advocacy Summit, NFDA members participated in nearly 200 meetings with Members of Congress and congressional staff. Those conversations helped lawmakers better understand the realities of funeral service and the ripple effects legislation can have on families and communities nationwide.

&amp;ldquo;You don&amp;rsquo;t need prior advocacy experience to make an impact,&amp;rdquo; said NFDA President Dan Ford, CFSP, CCSP. &amp;ldquo;If you care about the future of funeral service and the families we serve, your voice belongs on Capitol Hill. When NFDA members show up together, lawmakers listen and change happens.&amp;rdquo;

Prepared Voices. Meaningful Impact.

At the Advocacy Summit, NFDA members don&amp;rsquo;t just attend meetings, they drive the conversation. Lawmakers are most influenced by the people who live with the consequences of public policy, and funeral service professionals bring a perspective no one else can.

&amp;ldquo;Federal policy is shaped by the voices lawmakers hear directly,&amp;rdquo; said Lesley Witter, MPA, CAE, NFDA Senior Vice President of Advocacy. &amp;ldquo;When NFDA members share their experiences, it puts a human face on legislation. That insight is invaluable, and it&amp;rsquo;s why member participation is absolutely vital.&amp;rdquo;

NFDA ensures every participant is prepared to advocate with confidence. Before heading to Capitol Hill, attendees will receive comprehensive information that explains the legislative landscape, outlines NFDA&amp;rsquo;s policy priorities and provides clear guidance on how to communicate effectively with Members of Congress and their staff. While in Washington, D.C., the onsite issues briefing will review essential information, answer questions from members and ensure they are fully prepared for Congressional meetings. Whether it&amp;rsquo;s a member&amp;rsquo;s first time advocating or their tenth, NFDA equips them with the tools, talking points and support needed to make their voice heard.

During the 2026 Advocacy Summit, members will advocate for legislation and policies that directly affect funeral service professionals, the families they serve and the communities they support, including:

 &amp;ldquo;The Consensual Donation &amp;amp; Research Integrity Act&amp;rdquo; (S.1270 / H.R. 2589), which would establish federal safeguards to prevent the unethical trafficking of human remains
 &amp;ldquo;The Funeral Coverage Act&amp;rdquo; (H.R.&amp;nbsp;2436), aimed at designating funeral expenses as a qualified expense for HSAs, and easing financial impact on families
 Additional tax-related legislation and veterans burial benefit bills that impact funeral homes as small businesses and the families of those who served

Every congressional meeting helps educate policymakers, and every participant helps move the profession forward.

Three Days of Purposeful Engagement

Hosted once again at the historic Mayflower Hotel, the 2026 Advocacy Summit is designed to prepare, empower and mobilize members.

Wednesday, April 15 begins with registration, followed by a Welcome Session and Issues Briefing that equips attendees with the knowledge and confidence to advocate effectively. The day concludes with a Welcome Reception.

Thursday, April 16 is the heart of the Summit, featuring a Capitol Hill group photo and a full day of scheduled meetings with Members of Congress and their staff. An optional evening city tour offers a shared Washington, D.C., experience.

Friday, April 17 includes an optional wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring service and sacrifice, before concluding the Summit.

Real Voices. Real Impact.

Participants consistently describe the Advocacy Summit as one of the most empowering experiences NFDA offers.

&amp;ldquo;I had never advocated at the federal level before,&amp;rdquo; shared a recent attendee. &amp;ldquo;NFDA made it approachable, meaningful and impactful. Knowing my voice mattered was incredibly empowering.&amp;rdquo;

An attendee from the 2025 Summit noted that their favorite part of the event was, &amp;ldquo;Being involved in the process of advocating for the families we serve.&amp;rdquo;

Support Every Step of the Way

NFDA will again partner with Advocacy Associates to coordinate congressional meetings, ensuring each participant&amp;rsquo;s time on Capitol Hill is purposeful and impactful.

Between meetings, members can recharge in the NFDA Welcome Room at the Capitol Hill Club, where NFDA staff and leadership will be available to provide guidance and support throughout the day.

Early Registration Strongly Encouraged

Registering by the early-bird deadline of February 6 gives NFDA and Advocacy Associates the lead time needed to request and schedule meetings with Members of Congress and their staff &amp;ndash; an essential step in ensuring members&amp;rsquo; voices are heard where they matter most. The registration fee for NFDA members, NFDA member family, state association executives and state association staff members is $275 on or before February 6; after that date the price increases to $375. The price for special excursions is:&amp;nbsp;

 Evening City Tour: On or before February 6: $99; after February 6: $149
 Arlington National Cemetery: On or before February 6: $99; after February 6: $149

NFDA members are strongly encouraged to register as early as possible to maximize the effectiveness of congressional meeting scheduling. The early-bird registration deadline is February 6.

Participation is open to all NFDA members, their families, and state association executives and staff.

Attendees should plan to reserve their accommodations at the Mayflower Hotel, the host hotel for the 2026 Advocacy Summit, by the hotel reservation deadline Thursday, March 12. NFDA has reserved a limited number of rooms at the discounted rate of $384 plus tax and fees.

NFDA is now accepting entries for its transformational Meet the Mentors program.&amp;nbsp;

For Immediate Release: December 9, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is pleased to announce that the 2026 Meet the Mentors program will take place April 14-17, 2026, in Washington, D.C. This signature NFDA experience, which is held in conjunction with NFDA&amp;rsquo;s annual Advocacy Summit, offers early-career funeral professionals an unparalleled opportunity to learn directly from celebrated leaders and engage in advocacy on behalf of the funeral service profession.

Since its debut in 2011, Meet the Mentors has been fully funded and supported by the Funeral Service Foundation, whose steadfast commitment has enabled more than a decade of transformative mentorship, learning and leadership development. The Funeral Service Foundation covers the registration fees for Meet the Mentors and the Advocacy Summit, three nights of lodging, and a $500 travel reimbursement stipend for selected participants. This generous support ensures the program remains accessible to the profession&amp;rsquo;s next generation of leaders.

&amp;ldquo;For 15 years, Meet the Mentors has offered emerging funeral service professionals a rare opportunity to learn directly from leaders who generously share their experience, wisdom and perspective,&amp;rdquo; said Sara Moss, MS, FT, LFD, NFDA Associate Director of Education. &amp;ldquo;This program consistently helps participants build confidence, strengthen their skills and fosters a sense of purpose that supports them throughout their careers.&amp;rdquo;

The 2026 Meet the Mentors program will bring together 25 NFDA-member participants &amp;ndash; funeral directors and embalmers aged 40 and under, or within their first five years of licensure in the profession &amp;ndash; to learn from a distinguished group of mentors who are recognized for their leadership, dedication and impact on the funeral service profession.

NFDA is finalizing this year&amp;rsquo;s mentor panel and will announce the selected mentors very soon. As in past years, participants can expect to learn from accomplished professionals representing a range of backgrounds, specialties and experiences. These mentors will share candid insights about career development, leadership and the evolving landscape of funeral service, offering invaluable guidance to those at the beginning of their professional journeys.

Participants have high praise for NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Meet the Mentors program. &amp;ldquo;NFDA&amp;#39;s Meet the Mentors Program was an incredible experience,&amp;rdquo; said one 2025 participant. &amp;ldquo;I gained valuable knowledge and insights that I will be able to use throughout my career. I would highly recommend the program to all newly licensed professionals.&amp;rdquo;

In addition to presentations by the mentors, small-group roundtable discussions will enable participants to ask questions, explore career pathways and receive actionable advice they can take home immediately. Many mentees cite these conversations as some of the most meaningful moments of their professional lives.&amp;nbsp;

One 2025 participant noted, &amp;ldquo;The roundtables were my favorite part of this experience. It was really great to sit down and ask questions [of] each presenter and be able to have them share their experience on a more personal level.&amp;rdquo;

Advocacy in Action

An exciting component of Meet the Mentors is the opportunity to participate in the 2026 NFDA Advocacy Summit. Participants will join experienced colleagues for a full day on Capitol Hill, meeting with members of Congress to discuss federal issues impacting funeral service. By sharing their stories during these meetings, mentees will help federal legislators understand how their decisions affect, not just funeral professionals, but also grieving families.&amp;nbsp;

&amp;ldquo;I enjoyed the Congressional meetings so much and am looking forward to attending the Advocacy Summit again,&amp;rdquo; a 2025 mentee noted. &amp;ldquo;I was surprised how much I truly enjoyed doing this!&amp;rdquo;

How to Apply

Prospective participants can enter for their chance to participate in the 2026 Meet the Mentors through 11:59 p.m. CT on January 12, 2026.&amp;nbsp;

Thanks to the exclusive support of the Funeral Service Foundation, the program award covers registration fees for the Meet the Mentors program and Advocacy Summit, three nights of lodging and a $500 travel reimbursement stipend.

For Immediate Release: November 10, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The 2025 National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) International Convention &amp;amp; Expo brought together funeral service professionals from around the world for four unforgettable days of learning, connection and inspiration. Held October 26&amp;ndash;29 in Chicago, Illinois, the event invited attendees to explore new ideas, celebrate innovation and reaffirm the compassion at the heart of the profession.

From powerful keynote speakers and dynamic workshops to the world&amp;rsquo;s largest funeral service exposition, the NFDA Convention delivered an experience that blended education, creativity and community in equal measure. The atmosphere throughout McCormick Place reflected the energy and optimism of a profession dedicated to excellence and continuous growth.

As the funeral service profession&amp;rsquo;s premier gathering, the 2025 Convention once again set the standard for collaboration and leadership, proving that when funeral professionals come together, the result is transformation.

Total attendance for the 2025 Convention was 5,964 (3,625 participants and 2,339 exhibitor representatives). This included 393 international attendees from 39 countries and territories. The Expo Hall featured 357 exhibiting companies, filling 85,100 square feet of exhibit space.

Education and Inspiration

The 2025 Convention offered more than 30 education sessions and five pre-convention seminars, each carefully curated by the NFDA Convention Education Task Force to address evolving consumer expectations, workforce challenges and the latest innovations shaping funeral service.

Participants explored topics such as new forms of disposition (including alkaline hydrolysis and natural organic reduction), the integration of artificial intelligence, compassion fatigue, consumer communication, and strategies for strengthening business operations and marketing. Traditional subjects such as embalming, restorative art and cremation were also featured prominently.

During the Opening General Session on Monday, October 27, NFDA CEO Christine Pepper unveiled &amp;ldquo;When Words Matter: A Funeral Director&amp;rsquo;s Guide to Clear and Compassionate Communication,&amp;rdquo; a guidebook based on groundbreaking NFDA research designed to help funeral professionals bridge the language gap between themselves and the families they serve.

Based on research with more than 1,100 consumers, the study revealed stark differences in how families understand and use terms commonly used by funeral directors, such as funeral, memorial service and celebration of life. The guide invites funeral service professionals to reflect on how they communicate with grieving families and offers practical strategies to strengthen trust and clarity. Pepper announced that &amp;ldquo;When Words Matter&amp;rdquo; is available free of charge to funeral professionals at NFDA.org/Research.

That same spirit of reflection and growth continued throughout the week as attendees were inspired by two powerful keynote speakers who reminded them of the importance of passion and curiosity in their work. Felipe Gomez, sponsored by National Guardian Life, opened the convention with &amp;ldquo;Virtuoso: Living the Virtuoso Life,&amp;rdquo; an engaging experience blending live piano music with lessons on leadership, innovation and excellence. Gomez cautioned against becoming too comfortable or dispassionate in daily work, urging attendees to &amp;ldquo;play with passion,&amp;rdquo; because other people will respond to your energy. He invited participants to reflect on their work and consider whether they are simply playing the notes or truly playing with heart.

On Wednesday, October 29, Crystal Washington, sponsored by Carriage, echoed that theme in her closing keynote, &amp;ldquo;Futureproof Yourself: Innovate and Thrive in Times of Uncertainty.&amp;rdquo; She encouraged attendees to approach their work and the world with renewed curiosity, to cultivate a childlike sense of wonder, and to never stop asking, &amp;ldquo;What&amp;rsquo;s that?&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Why?&amp;rdquo;. In doing so, she reminded funeral professionals that curiosity and passion are the keys to embracing change with creativity and confidence.

The Expo Hall: Innovation in Action

The 2025 NFDA Expo Hall once again served as the global hub of innovation in funeral service. Attendees explored the latest products and technologies from exhibitors worldwide, networked with industry leaders and experienced firsthand how innovation is shaping the future of care for grieving families.

Among the most celebrated moments was the announcement of the 2025 NFDA Innovation Award during Monday&amp;rsquo;s Opening General Session. This year&amp;rsquo;s winner was Grace by Afterword, the profession&amp;rsquo;s first AI assistant designed specifically for funeral homes. Grace automates routine administrative tasks, supports personalized communication and helps funeral directors focus on serving families with compassion and efficiency.

Healing Path Cemetery, a grief-focused engagement system, earned second place, while Passare &amp;ndash; AI Scanner, a handwriting-recognition tool that digitizes vital forms, took third. NFDA extends its gratitude to ASD &amp;ndash; Answering Service for Directors for sponsoring the award and the distinguished panel of judges who selected this year&amp;rsquo;s winners.

Artistry and Excellence

A major highlight of the convention was NFDA&amp;rsquo;s first-ever Restorative Art Technical Showcase, where eight talented practitioners demonstrated advanced reconstructive techniques on practice models before a live audience in the Expo Hall. The competition&amp;rsquo;s winner, Hannah Bugos of Spearfish, South Dakota, was honored for her exceptional skill, artistry and technical precision.

NFDA thanks judges Glyn Tallon, Vernie Fountain and Karl Wenzel for their expertise and the competition sponsor, Post Mortem Restorative Cosmetics, for helping showcase the craft, care and creativity that define restorative art in funeral service. NFDA also thanks The Dodge Co., Frigid Fluid and Kelco for additional product and supply support.

NFDA&amp;rsquo;s fourth annual Funeral Face-Off trivia challenge, sponsored by Precoa, once again brought high-energy competition and plenty of laughs to the Expo Hall. Before the Convention, teams from across the country competed in preliminary rounds of funeral service trivia, leading to three finalists: &amp;ldquo;Return Homies&amp;rdquo; (Katey Houston, Mandy Stafford and Travis Locke); &amp;ldquo;Grave Expectations&amp;rdquo; (Kevin O&amp;rsquo;Connell, Jacob Wittrock and Amy Hart); and &amp;ldquo;Team Steve&amp;rdquo; (Steve Reynolds, Melany Artajo and Audrey Fictum).

In the end, the &amp;ldquo;Return Homies&amp;rdquo; reclaimed the 2025 Precoa Cup, followed by &amp;ldquo;Grave Expectations&amp;rdquo; in second place and &amp;ldquo;Team Steve&amp;rdquo; in third. This fan-favorite event once again proved that a little friendly competition is the perfect way to celebrate knowledge, teamwork and fun in funeral service. In addition to the support from Precoa, NFDA thanks Tuesday Evening Publications for providing prizes for Funeral Face-off.

Celebrating Service, Connection and Community

The 2025 NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo offered countless opportunities to celebrate the people, passion and purpose that define funeral service.

The week began on Sunday, October 26, in unforgettable style with NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Welcome Party, sponsored by Batesville and Legacy. Held at Chicago&amp;rsquo;s iconic House of Blues, the roaring 1920s-themed event transported guests to the Prohibition era, complete with live jazz, tarot readers, typewriter poets, whiskey tastings and high-energy dance performances. Attendees enjoyed small bites, cocktails and Charleston dance lessons as they connected with colleagues from throughout the country and around the globe. With glittering flapper dresses, pinstripes and fedoras filling the room, it was truly the party of the decade and a joyful start to the week.

The celebration of excellence continued Monday, October 27, with the NFDA All-Star Recognition Ceremony, honoring funeral professionals who exemplify leadership, innovation and dedication to serving families and their communities. The ceremony recognized: the 2025 NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award recipients; NFDA Green Funeral Practice Certificate holders; NFDA Cremation Certification designees; NFDA Certified Preplanning Consultants; Funeral Service Foundation scholarship recipients; 2025&amp;ndash;26 NFDA National Emerging Leaders Program participants; 2025 Meet the Mentors participants; the 2025 NFDA Inspiration Award recipient; and Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice Certified Funeral Service Practitioners. From emerging leaders to seasoned professionals, the ceremony shone a spotlight on the passion and commitment that elevates the profession and inspires others to pursue excellence.

One of the week&amp;rsquo;s most moving moments came on Tuesday, October 28, during the Service of Remembrance, sponsored by Messenger and Tukios, and featuring Chicago&amp;rsquo;s historic Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Choir. The service honored funeral service professionals and loved ones who died during the past year, celebrating their lives and legacies with music and reflection.&amp;nbsp;

The sermon, delivered by Pastor Darryl Person of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, drew inspiration from the hymn &amp;ldquo;Peace in the Valley&amp;rdquo; and the city&amp;rsquo;s distinction as the birthplace of gospel music. Person, the son of a funeral director, spoke eloquently about grieving families &amp;ldquo;walking through the valley,&amp;rdquo; and reminded attendees that they are called to walk with them &amp;mdash; to offer comfort and companionship on the journey toward healing.

As the final hymn during the Service of Remembrance faded, attendees gave generously, raising $5,000 for Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, a fitting reflection of the care and kindness that define funeral service.

On Tuesday evening, the spotlight turned to the next generation of professionals during the Young and New Funeral Professionals Networking Event at Lucky Strike Chicago. This energetic gathering combined bowling, arcade games, billiards, food and conversation in a relaxed atmosphere, giving newcomers to the profession the opportunity to connect, share experiences and build lasting relationships.

Compassion in Action: The NFDA Impact Zone

The new NFDA Impact Zone, which was supported by the Funeral Service Foundation, provided meaningful opportunities for attendees to give back to Chicago.

On Monday, October 27, volunteers assembled 1,000 hygiene kits for individuals and families in need. The kits will be distributed through Bright Star, a local organization serving Chicago&amp;rsquo;s most impoverished neighborhoods, with coordination from Chicago Cares.

Throughout the week, attendees also wrote letters of appreciation to veterans participating in upcoming Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. These heartfelt notes were sent to Honor Flight chapters in Chicago, Peoria and Southern Illinois and will be delivered to veterans during &amp;ldquo;Mail Call,&amp;rdquo; a cherished moment on their journey home from visiting national memorials.

Funeral directors are among the most community-minded professionals in the world, and the Impact Zone reflects that enduring spirit of service. Whether building kits or writing letters, NFDA members once again demonstrated that compassion and care for communities are at the heart of everything they do.

Memories of Chicago

Professional photographers were on hand to capture the spirit and excitement of the 2025 NFDA Convention. Photos can be viewed online at NFDA.org/ChicagoPics; attendees may download as many photos as they like at no charge.

Additionally, the All-Star Recognition and Installation of the 2025-26 NFDA Board of Directors were livestreamed on the association&amp;rsquo;s Facebook page. Recordings of these events can be found online, Facebook.com/NationalFuneralDirectorsAssociation/Live_Videos.&amp;nbsp;

Looking Ahead: Charlotte 2026

The 145th NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo will take place October 25 through 28, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and known for its warm hospitality and dynamic blend of Southern charm and modern innovation, Charlotte promises another unforgettable experience of learning, networking and inspiration.

For Immediate Release: October 28, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has announced a new honor within its renowned Pursuit of Excellence Award program: the Remembering A Life Award. This new recognition, debuting in 2026, will celebrate funeral homes that create the profession&amp;rsquo;s most personal and meaningful funerals and memorial services &amp;ndash; those that go beyond expectations to bring comfort, healing and significance to the families they serve.

The new award was formally announced during the association&amp;rsquo;s All-Star Recognition Ceremony on Monday, October 27, at the 2025 NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo in Chicago.

&amp;ldquo;The Remembering A Life Award will shine a spotlight on the heart of what funeral service professionals do for grieving families,&amp;rdquo; said NFDA Director of Public Relations Jessica Koth, who manages the Pursuit of Excellence Program. &amp;ldquo;It will honor those moments when creativity, compassion and attention to detail come together to help families remember, grieve and begin to heal. We look forward to presenting the first Remembering A Life Awards during next year&amp;rsquo;s All-Star Recognition Ceremony.&amp;rdquo;

Elevating the Heart of Funeral Service

The Remembering A Life Award aligns closely with NFDA&amp;rsquo;s consumer initiative, Remembering A Life, which educates families about the value of funerals and memorial services and offers resources for planning meaningful tributes and beginning the grief journey.

Each year, up to five funeral homes will be selected by the Pursuit of Excellence Work Group for this distinction. Recipients will be chosen based on essays submitted as part of their Pursuit of Excellence entry that describe a personal and meaningful funeral or memorial service. Submissions will be evaluated on how creatively the service honored the life of the deceased, incorporated family wishes and cultural traditions and exceeded expectations to provide a truly meaningful experience.

Building on a Legacy of Excellence

Established more than 45 years ago by the late NFDA Past President Richard Myers, the Pursuit of Excellence Award program honors funeral homes that consistently demonstrate integrity, innovation and service excellence. In addition to the new Remembering A Life Award, the program includes:

 Pursuit of Excellence Award: The program&amp;rsquo;s foundational honor, recognizing achievement in six categories of excellence.
 Hall of Excellence: Funeral homes are inducted into the Hall of Excellence upon earning their 10th Pursuit of Excellence Award.
 Richard Myers Pinnacle Award: Recognizes an extraordinary program or service that redefines funeral service excellence.
 Best of the Best Award: Honors up to five funeral homes annually for novel and innovative programs or services.
 Honorable Mention: Acknowledges programs that positively impact the families and communities served.

Reinforcing NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Strategic Vision

The introduction of the Remembering A Life Award supports several priorities outlined in NFDA&amp;rsquo;s 2024-26 Strategic Plan, including raising the profile of funeral professionals among consumers, increasing understanding of the value of meaningful memorialization and inspiring innovation across the profession.

&amp;ldquo;The Pursuit of Excellence program has always set the standard for service excellence,&amp;rdquo; said Koth. &amp;ldquo;This new award reflects our ongoing commitment to helping funeral professionals elevate their work and demonstrate the deep value of meaningful memorialization to families and communities.&amp;rdquo;

The first Remembering A Life Awards will be presented during the All-Star Recognition Ceremony at the 2026 NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For Immediate Release: October 27, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has released &amp;ldquo;When Words Matter: A Funeral Director&amp;rsquo;s Guide to Clear and Compassionate Communication,&amp;rdquo; a groundbreaking, research-driven resource designed to bridge the growing language gap between funeral professionals and the families they serve. The study and guide were unveiled today during the Opening General Session of the 2025 NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo in Chicago.

Available now as a free download at NFDA.org/Research, this new guide is grounded in original NFDA research conducted earlier this year with more than 1,100 U.S. consumers across four generations. The findings reveal a striking disconnect between how funeral professionals and families understand commonly used industry terms and offer actionable strategies for improving clarity, trust and emotional connection.

&amp;ldquo;Families aren&amp;rsquo;t wrong &amp;ndash; they&amp;rsquo;re simply speaking a different language,&amp;rdquo; said 2025-26 NFDA President Daniel J. Ford, CFSP. &amp;ldquo;Our words are shaped by training and tradition, while families&amp;rsquo; words come from culture, faith, media and emotion. This guide helps us bridge those differences so families feel understood and supported.&amp;rdquo;

Addressing a Widening Communication Gap

The guide grew out of a key strategic initiative within NFDA&amp;rsquo;s 2023&amp;ndash;26 plan: to explore the differences and similarities in how funeral directors and consumers talk about death, grief and remembrance.&amp;nbsp;

While funeral professionals have long used terms like &amp;ldquo;funeral,&amp;rdquo; &amp;ldquo;memorial service&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;celebration of life,&amp;rdquo; the new study revealed that families often define &amp;ndash; or misunderstand &amp;ndash; these terms in radically different ways.

For example, only 16% of consumers defined memorial service as a service with the body present in a casket &amp;ndash; the same definition used by funeral directors.. And, more than 75% of respondents said they had never even heard the term direct cremation.

Younger generations, especially Gen Z and Millennials, reported the highest levels of confusion and the strongest preference for clear, plainspoken language.

&amp;ldquo;This is a pivotal moment for our profession,&amp;rdquo; said Ford. &amp;ldquo;Today&amp;rsquo;s families are diverse &amp;ndash; culturally, generationally, spiritually &amp;ndash; and they bring different expectations to the conversation. As funeral directors, we have a responsibility to meet them where they are &amp;ndash; listening first and then speaking with clarity and compassion.&amp;rdquo;

A Practical, Interactive Tool

&amp;ldquo;The gap between professional language and consumer understanding isn&amp;rsquo;t unique to funeral service &amp;ndash; it exists in law, medicine, accounting and nearly every specialized field,&amp;rdquo; said Ford. &amp;ldquo;The difference is that in funeral service, the words we use carry extraordinary emotional weight. &amp;lsquo;When Words Matter&amp;rsquo; helps us translate our professional terminology into language that resonates with families, building trust and understanding.&amp;rdquo;

&amp;ldquo;When Words Matter&amp;rdquo; includes:

 Consumer quotes illustrating how different terms are perceived.
 Side-by-side comparisons of industry terms and plain-language alternatives.
 Conversation starters and roleplay scripts to train staff in empathetic communication.
 Website and print checklist to help ensure consumer-facing materials are clear and welcoming.
 Self-reflection questions for ongoing professional development.
 Team action plan templates for implementing changes over the next 90 days.

&amp;ldquo;This guide is not a rulebook for funeral directors; it&amp;rsquo;s a conversation starter for the staff at your funeral home,&amp;rdquo; Ford noted. &amp;ldquo;Some of what&amp;rsquo;s in here may challenge long-held assumptions. But it&amp;rsquo;s also an invitation to grow, to serve with even greater excellence, and to ensure that every family walks away feeling seen, understood, and supported.&amp;rdquo;

Part of NFDA&amp;rsquo;s Unmatched Research Commitment

&amp;ldquo;When Words Matter&amp;rdquo; continues NFDA&amp;rsquo;s decades-long commitment to producing the funeral profession&amp;rsquo;s most trusted, independent research. In the past year alone, NFDA has released:

 &amp;ldquo;Across Borders, Across Traditions: A Global Study of Funeral Preferences&amp;rdquo; (2025) is the first international survey of consumer attitudes toward funerals.
 &amp;ldquo;Changing Consumer Preferences: A Generational Perspective on Attitudes Toward Funeral Service&amp;rdquo; (2025) offers deep insights into how Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z think about funerals.
 &amp;ldquo;Consumer Awareness and Preferences Survey&amp;rdquo; (2025) offers quantitative and qualitative research on what U.S. families expect from modern funeral service.

All studies and tools are available at NFDA.org/Research.&amp;nbsp;

&amp;ldquo;NFDA is proud to lead the profession in original, evidence-based research that helps funeral directors make informed business decisions and deliver meaningful service,&amp;rdquo; Ford said. &amp;ldquo;Language shapes experience and &amp;ldquo;When Words Matter&amp;rdquo; is another example of NFDA helping members strengthen the connection between what we say and what families hear.&amp;rdquo;

A Tool for Every Funeral Director

Whether serving grieving families or advocating for the profession, &amp;ldquo;When Words Matter&amp;rdquo; helps funeral directors improve communication in their day-to-day work and long-term strategy.

&amp;ldquo;In our profession, the words we choose aren&amp;rsquo;t just important, they&amp;rsquo;re sacred,&amp;rdquo; Ford said. &amp;ldquo;They shape the way people remember, heal and find meaning. This guide is one more way NFDA is helping funeral directors lead with integrity, empathy and skill.&amp;rdquo;

NFDA is the world&amp;#39;s leading and largest funeral service association representing 20,000 individual members who represent nearly 11,000 funeral homes in the United States and 49 countries around the world. NFDA is the trusted leader, beacon for ethics and the strongest advocate for the profession. <title>Americans Embrace Digital Funeral Planning While Still Seeking Professional Guidance, New NFDA Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study Reveals</title>

    <description>For Immediate Release

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), the world&amp;#39;s leading and largest funeral service association, has released its &amp;quot;2025 Consumer Awareness &amp;amp; Preferences Study,&amp;quot; revealing significant shifts in how Americans approach death and funeral planning. The comprehensive research shows consumers are increasingly embracing digital solutions while simultaneously demonstrating growing reliance on funeral directors&amp;#39; expertise.&amp;nbsp;

   Funeral Service Professionals

   The NFDA Consumer Awareness and Preferences Survey allows its participants to voice their perceptions of funeral service and memorialization trends. Learn more about the findings about online shopping, preferred disposition methods, general price lists, social media and more in this comprehensive report, which is available for download at NFDA.org/Research.

The research continues NFDA&amp;#39;s ongoing effort since 2012 to track evolving consumer attitudes and help funeral service professionals better serve families.

Key findings include:

 Digital adoption surges: Nearly 30% of families now complete all funeral arrangements online, while 40% of consumers have used the services of a funeral home they found on Facebook - nearly doubling from 21% in 2023.
 Professional expertise increasingly valued: 44.4% would feel not very confident or not at all confident planning a funeral without a funeral director&amp;#39;s help - up 7.1% since 2024, despite growing digital adoption. Additionally, of those consumers who planned a funeral online, nearly 48% still needed the assistance of a funeral director and more than 15% felt the online planning process was either impersonal and lacked the level of compassionate service they would have received had they planned with a funeral director.&amp;nbsp;
 Religion remains central: 75.7% consider religious components very important or somewhat important in funeral services, while nearly 64% would arrange livestreaming for distant relatives.
 Green options gain appeal: More than 61.4% of consumers are interested in exploring &amp;quot;green&amp;quot; funeral and natural burial options.
 Economic pressures shape choices: 55.4% of respondents earned less than $50,000 annually, compared to 38.5% in 2024, influencing demand for value.
 Pre-planning preferences evolve: While 19.4% have pre-planned and prepaid for arrangements, primarily to guarantee prices and relieve survivors of financial burden, 31.8% prefer a hybrid approach combining online planning with direct funeral director consultation.

&amp;quot;This research demonstrates that while technology is transforming how families access funeral services, the fundamental value of professional guidance remains irreplaceable,&amp;quot; said Dutch Nie, NFDA Immediate Past-President and Nie Family Funeral Home &amp;amp; Cremation Services owner, CEO/President and funeral director. &amp;quot;Funeral directors are successfully adapting to digital expectations while maintaining their essential role as trusted advisors during families&amp;#39; most difficult times.&amp;quot;

The study also reveals that consumers increasingly view funeral directors as valuable experts, with growing recognition of their professional expertise in navigating complex arrangements and providing essential support during grief.

About the Study&amp;nbsp;

The 2025 NFDA Consumer Awareness &amp;amp; Preferences Study continues NFDA&amp;#39;s ongoing research tracking consumer attitudes since 2012. The study &amp;nbsp;is designed to help funeral service professionals better understand and serve evolving family needs while maintaining the highest standards of care and professionalism. Conducted in the spring of 2025, 1,126 Americans age 40 and older were surveyed.

The Cards Are Perfect for Families That Are Preplanning a Funeral, Planning at the Time of Need or Simply Want to Have an Interesting Conversation

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; Remembering A Life, a consumer education initiative that educates people about the importance of remembering loved ones in meaningful ways after they die, has introduced two new decks of conversation cards that will help family and friends get to know each other better and plan meaningful tributes to loved ones.&amp;nbsp;

Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards get the conversation started and help family and friends get to know each other better so when it&amp;rsquo;s time to plan a funeral or memorial service for a loved one, they are better prepared to make it meaningful with special touches that help attendees learn more about the unique life lived. Each of the 50 questions invites people to share stories about meaningful moments, relationships, objects, adventures, accomplishments and more. Additional prompts invite them to further explore their answers to each question, encouraging them to connect with others, pull out meaningful mementos or do an activity related to their answer.

&amp;ldquo;Funerals, memorial services and celebrations of life are the most meaningful when they beautifully reflect the life lived,&amp;rdquo; said Gail Marquardt, vice president of consumer engagement for the National Funeral Directors Association/Remembering A Life. &amp;ldquo;When we create a service that reflects the individual&amp;rsquo;s interests, passions, relationships and accomplishments, we share a beautiful and complete story of the person we love with everyone who has gathered to mourn and celebrate the life lived.&amp;rdquo;

Remembering A Life Funeral Planning Conversation Cards help families and friends create a safe, comfortable environment for having a conversation about a person&amp;rsquo;s final wishes and guide them in planning a meaningful tribute for themselves or a loved one.

This deck of 52 thought-provoking questions will help get the conversation started and help put family members and friends at ease while talking about a topic that may generate a variety of emotions. Questions cover five key areas.
&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Talking About Death
&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Your Body
&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The Service
&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Honoring Your Life
&amp;bull;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The Details

&amp;ldquo;Starting a conversation about death, funerals and grieving can be a bit unfamiliar,&amp;rdquo; said Marquardt. &amp;ldquo;Whether you&amp;rsquo;re doing some advance planning for yourself, planning a tribute for someone else, or simply want to have an interesting conversation with family and friends, the questions in the Remembering A Life Funeral Planning Conversation Cards deck will inspire you to think about how the service can be uniquely meaningful.&amp;rdquo;

According to research by the National Funeral Directors Association, 41.9% of people who preplan and prepay for their funeral arrangements do so because they don&amp;rsquo;t want their survivors to worry about making arrangements. (2025 NFDA Consumer Awareness &amp;amp; Preferences Study)

&amp;ldquo;While prepaying for funeral or memorial services has cost saving advantages, it&amp;rsquo;s important to note that preplanning doesn&amp;rsquo;t have to include prepaying,&amp;rdquo; Marquardt continued. &amp;ldquo;Simply documenting a person&amp;rsquo;s wishes can offer significant peace of mind. These conversation cards inspire meaningful conversations that help ensure a service reflects the individual&amp;rsquo;s wishes and also the wishes of their family and close friends.&amp;rdquo;

The new decks complete a set of three conversation card decks that also includes Remembering A Life Journey Cards, which features 52 ideas for remembering loved ones in meaningful ways. This deck helps family members and friends as they explore their grief journey, offering simple yet meaningful ways to keep a loved one&amp;rsquo;s memory close.

Suite of Conversation Cards Now Covers Every Step of the Journey: Preplanning, Funeral Planning and Aftercare

For Immediate Release: October 23, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; Remembering A Life, the consumer education initiative of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), has introduced two new decks of conversation cards that funeral directors can use to inspire the families they serve to plan meaningful tributes to loved ones.&amp;nbsp;

Remembering A Life Funeral Planning Conversation Cards are brand new to the Remembering A Life Conversation Card suite. These conversation cards help families and friends create a safe, comfortable environment for having a conversation about a person&amp;rsquo;s final wishes and help them plan a meaningful tribute for themselves or a loved one with the guidance of a funeral professional.

This deck of 52 thought-provoking questions will help get the conversation started and help put family members and friends at ease while talking about a topic that may generate a variety of emotions. Questions cover five key areas.

 Talking About Death
 Your Body
 The Service
 Honoring Your Life
 The Details

Each card goes beyond the question itself, offering thoughtful prompts and helpful information to guide a discussion. Families will find insights about the value of a viewing, the benefits of preplanning and why connecting with an NFDA-member funeral home can make a difference.

&amp;ldquo;Inspiring people to have meaningful discussions about death and funerals isn&amp;rsquo;t easy,&amp;rdquo; said Gail Marquardt, vice president of consumer engagement for NFDA. &amp;ldquo;These decks help family members and friends create a safe, comfortable environment for having a conversation about a person&amp;rsquo;s final wishes and guide them in working with a funeral professional to plan a meaningful tribute for themselves or a loved one.&amp;rdquo;

Funeral professionals can use the cards as a preneed tool, during the arrangement conference as conversation starters or as a giveaway for a workshop or open house.

Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards have been reimagined and redesigned with new content and additional prompts to help family and friends get to know each other better so when it&amp;rsquo;s time to create a tribute for a loved one, they are better prepared to make it meaningful. Each of the 50 questions invites people to share stories about meaningful moments, relationships, objects, adventures, accomplishments and more. Additional prompts invite them to further explore their answers to each question, encouraging them to share their stories with others, pull out meaningful mementos or do an activity related to their answer.

&amp;ldquo;Funeral directors have embraced Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards since they were introduced nearly ten years ago,&amp;rdquo; said Marquardt. &amp;ldquo;We were excited to give them a new look and include expanded content to further enrich families&amp;rsquo; experiences with the cards. The questions and prompts in this deck help families create a service that beautifully reflects an individual&amp;rsquo;s interests, passions, relationships and accomplishments.&amp;rdquo;

For funeral professionals, Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards are the perfect preneed and storytelling tool. Funeral professionals can use the cards as a preneed/lead generation tool, as conversation starters during the arrangement conference and in the funeral home waiting area. The cards are also the perfect thank-you gift for visiting a funeral home open house or preplanning workshop.

The new decks complete a set of three conversation card decks that also includes Remembering A Life Journey Cards, which feature 52 ideas for remembering loved ones in meaningful ways. This deck helps family members and friends as they explore their grief journey, offering simple yet meaningful ways to keep a loved one&amp;rsquo;s memory close.

All three decks of conversation cards are available at NFDA.org/Store. The decks are $10 each for NFDA members and $15 each for non-members. Quantity discounts are available, and decks can also be customized with a funeral home logo.

Funeral professionals attending the 2025 NFDA International Convention &amp;amp; Expo in Chicago can visit the Remembering A Life booth (1831) for free sample packs and can purchase full decks at the convention as well.

For Immediate Release: October 23, 2025

Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is proud to announce that Lesley Witter, MPA, CAE, Senior Vice President, Advocacy, has been named one of the 2025 Top Lobbyists by the National Institute for Lobbying &amp;amp; Ethics (NILE).

This prestigious, merit-based honor recognizes 100 government affairs professionals nationwide who have demonstrated exceptional legislative success, innovation, integrity and a commitment to ethical advocacy.

While the award celebrates an individual, it also reflects NFDA&amp;rsquo;s powerful leadership and unwavering presence in Washington, D.C., as the only funeral service association with a full-time presence dedicated to representing the profession on Capitol Hill.

&amp;ldquo;For decades, NFDA has served as the strongest and most trusted voice for funeral service in our nation&amp;rsquo;s capital,&amp;rdquo; said NFDA CEO Christine Pepper, CAE, MBA. &amp;ldquo;Lesley&amp;rsquo;s recognition as a Top Lobbyist underscores the strength and credibility of our advocacy program. Her expertise, dedication and integrity make her a force in our Nation&amp;rsquo;s Capital. I am honored to work alongside Lesley as we ensure that the needs of funeral service professionals and the grieving families they serve are represented with compassion, integrity and impact.&amp;rdquo;

Witter has led NFDA&amp;rsquo;s advocacy efforts for nearly 19 years, shaping federal policy on behalf of thousands of funeral homes, funeral directors and grieving families nationwide. Her recent achievements include securing protections for embalming under the EPA&amp;rsquo;s final Risk Evaluation of formaldehyde; driving awareness of the need for oversight of the body donation industry; and advancing bipartisan legislation to honor and protect veterans and their families.

&amp;ldquo;Lobbying and government affairs are essential to democracy because they give everyone a voice,&amp;rdquo; said Witter. &amp;ldquo;I chose to advocate for funeral service because I believe every voice deserves to be heard, not just the loudest or most powerful. This profession is about service, and lobbying in this space allows me to combine strategic advocacy with purpose-driven work. It&amp;rsquo;s about fairness, representation, and ensuring that those who serve others are not forgotten in the decisions that shape their ability to do so.&amp;rdquo;

NFDA works year-round to monitor federal legislation, engage with agencies and lawmakers, and mobilize members through grassroots initiatives such as the annual NFDA Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. From workforce challenges to veteran benefits and regulatory reform, NFDA&amp;rsquo;s leadership ensures the profession remains strong, respected and heard.

NFDA is the world&amp;#39;s leading and largest funeral service association representing 20,000 individual members who represent nearly 11,000 funeral homes in the United States and 49 countries around the world. NFDA is the trusted leader, beacon for ethics and the strongest advocate for the profession. Brookfield, Wis. &amp;ndash; The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has released its &amp;ldquo;2025 Cremation &amp;amp; Burial Report,&amp;rdquo; the most comprehensive analysis of consumer disposition trends available to funeral service professionals. The report shows the U.S. cremation rate is projected to reach 63.4% in 2025, more than double the burial rate of 31.6%. With state-by-state U.S. projections, as well as data from Canada and worldwide, the report provides funeral directors with the reliable, research-based insights they need to anticipate change, identify opportunities and serve families with confidence.

The &amp;ldquo;NFDA Cremation &amp;amp; Burial Report&amp;rdquo; not only offers accurate statistics and projections, but also the broader context that funeral professionals need to make informed decisions for their businesses and the families they serve.

Key Findings From the 2025 Report

 The U.S. cremation rate is projected to reach 63.4% in 2025, more than double the burial rate of 31.6%. By 2045, cremation will account for 82.3% of dispositions, while burials will decline to 13.0%.
 All 50 states and the District of Columbia are projected to surpass a 50% cremation rate by 2035.
 In Canada, cremations are expected to rise to 91.2% by 2045.
 Nearly 36% of member firms already offer online cremation arrangements, with another 25% planning to do so within four years.
 NFDA-member firms continue to identify the availability of qualified personnel as their greatest business challenge over the next four years.

The report goes beyond statistics, incorporating analysis of economic conditions, workforce challenges, consumer preferences and funeral home operational trends. By putting cremation and burial projections in context, NFDA provides members with a sharper, more complete picture of how the profession is evolving and what it means for the future of service.

Accessing the Report and Other NFDA Research

The &amp;ldquo;2025 NFDA Cremation &amp;amp; Burial Report&amp;rdquo; is available free of charge to NFDA members and for $175 for nonmembers. Funeral professionals can download the report at NFDA.org/Research.
